Sliding Shower Doors - Part 1 of 2

Sliding shower doors can be more convenient to some than conventional shower curtains. Not only do sliding doors stay in place as you shower, but they also are easy to clean to help prevent mold or other contaminant build up. Furthermore, the right shower doors can give your bathroom a little extra style and flair.

Choices in Sliding Shower Doors

There are many manufacturers that carry sliding doors. You can either have them professionally installed or find a shower kit that lets you do the job yourself. Many doors fall into the $300 and $600 range although you may find a few that cost more or less than this amount.

For example, DreamLine’s Vision collection features the white sliding tub door. Like many of its doors, this series is constructed of tempered glass and anodized aluminum profiles and frames with a choice of finishes. The integrated rollers allow smooth and quiet operation while the glass is available as clear or frosted. These doors are good for shower cubicles or smaller corner baths as they are available in 72 or 58 inches. This Vision model costs less than $300.

If you have a walk in shower or other enclosure, you may consider one of DreamLine’s other collection. The Infinity has a complete shower enclosure that includes a shower door and matching center drain tray. The brush nickel frame finish accents the ¼-inch tempered frosted glass.

The single sliding shower door is reversible for both left and right opening. The durable top is both scratch and stain resistant while the textured floor is slip resistant. This fiberglass reinforced option costs a little more than $600.

Other Shower Door Options

While sliding shower doors can be both beautiful and functional, you may still want to look into other types of doors. One option is the bi-fold shower door. Rather than sliding, this door folds into two sections upon opening. This type of door usually falls into the price range between $500 and $700, so you are making a long-term investment.

Basco Shower Enclosures carries a line of bi-fold shower doors that you can customize to an extent. For example, you can get your door size will be 67 inches high but you can choose a width of between 23½ inches and 36½ inches as the height. You may also choose from glass types such as cascade, clear glass, fluted, heirloom, obscure glass or rain.

The clear glass and rain options cost $21 more than the obscure glass door while the cascade, fluted and heirloom options costs $90 more. If you select a silver finish, you will pay no extra, but if you select a gold finish, expect to pay $65 more. You may also add aqua glass protection for $66. Without any extras, this design costs about $550.

Your bathroom can get a nice upgrade whether you decide on sliding shower doors or on a bi-fold shower door. With a little work, you can install your new door yourself and enjoy your new bathroom décor.
