Greenhouse Windows - Part 1 of 3

Installing a greenhouse window (or 'window sill greenhouse') is a fantastic way to brighten up an otherwise gloomy room. Put simply, these types of windows jut out slightly from the side of the house, enabling homeowners to place flowers, herbs, vegetables or all sorts of plants on the ledge created by the window.

Aluminum vs. vinyl windows

Although there are a variety of different shapes, styles and materials for window sill greenhouses, greenhouse windows may be separated into two general categories: aluminum and vinyl. There are a number of advantages and disadvantages of both. While vinyl windows are more resistant to condensation, aluminum windows attract far less heat than vinyl windows, which may be a deciding factor if you would like to enhance the true 'greenhouse' feel of your window. In addition, vinyl windows are not susceptible to paint peeling.

Installing greenhouse windows

First of all, you will need to measure your existing window to determine how large your garden window should be. It is important to know that different window sellers will provide different information regarding this step - some suggest that your measurements be exact, while others advise you to allow a little bit of extra 'breathing room' for your window.

Depending on the smoothness of your house's exterior, you may need to establish a small wooden foundation where you plan to fasten your garden window. After you have fastened your new window to your house, you may need to establish supports to ensure that your window does not fall and break. In fact, a failure to establish supports may be cause for your window's manufacturer to void your warranty.

What to plant in greenhouse windows

While there are hundreds of different types of plants that could be placed in a window sill greenhouse, it is possible to narrow down your choices by deciding what function you would like these plants to serve. If you just want something nice to look at, consider petunias or geraniums for spring and summer viewing, or a small spruce if you would like to fill your sill with greenery year-round.

If you are looking for something to freshen up your room in the aroma department, try a mint or lemon-related plant. For those who like a midnight snack, a small vegetable garden could be perfect.

It is not difficult to build a garden window, provided you know how and with what materials you should construct one. Once built, a window sill garden can keep giving rewards for years to come. Happy gardening!
