Art Deco Figure - Part 1 of 2

Art Deco, the 1920s decorative art style known for its graceful curves, geometry-inspired shapes, unique line quality, and bold colors, has had a significant influence on a variety of home décor. Since its 1960s-era revival, the Art Deco movement has remained extremely popular. Moreover, many figurines in the Art Deco style currently on the market may possess significant value for the avid collector.

Arthur von Frankenberg, a noted sculptor and Art Deco designer, created some of the most beautiful and stylized Art Deco figures to be found. His unique designs emphasized the artistry of the female form in a variety of household items, including ashtrays, ash stands, candlestick standing figures, vases, bookends, as well as other figures. Avid collectors may find examples of his fine work by searching under the name of Frankart, Inc.

Betty Beck, another Art Deco artist popular in the 1920s, also created a variety of pieces featuring female nudes. Her figures are noted for their intricate detail in jadeite and various metals. Moreover, the ladies are styled into graceful poses, whether they are holding ash bowls or shades for lamps, for example.

Louis V. Aronson, founder of the Ronson Art Metal Company has produced many stunning Art Deco figures. Most notable are his Buddha bookend figures. These polychrome, cold painted Buddhas are seated in the traditional lotus position, and portray the characteristically contemplative and serene expressions associated with such figures.

After World War I, an escapist mood was prevalent, particularly in France.
